South Africa’s Kiteboarding Paradise
If there’s a place that feels straight out of a postcard, it’s Dolphin Beach. With Table Mountain in the background and the wind roaring through, this is one of the most iconic kiteboarding spots in the world. Just up the coast lies Big Bay, a bit calmer and social, perfect for relaxed sessions. Head south to Sunset Beach, where the hardcore locals of Blouberg push their limits every afternoon.

Best season: From November to March, when the famous Cape Doctor wind kicks in. Summer here means long sunny days, consistent wind, and the best kitesurfing conditions you can imagine.
How to get there: Fly into Cape Town International Airport, rent a car, and in about 30 minutes you’ll be standing in the sand. Most riders stay around Blouberg, where everything is within walking distance; kite schools, shops, and restaurants.
Wind, waves, and pure adrenaline
The Cape Doctor usually starts mid-morning and keeps blowing until sunset. Expect 20 to 35 knots most days, with clean, steady wind. If you weigh around 80 kg, a 7–9m kite will be your daily setup. Bring a 5m if you like it wild.
The ocean here is alive — choppy water, rolling swell, and perfect kickers for freestyle or big air. It’s not a lagoon; it’s the Atlantic showing off.
Recommended level: Intermediate to advanced. Beginners often warm up at Langebaan, a calmer lagoon nearby, before taking on Dolphin Beach.
Safety and respect
Cold water, heavy shore break, and strong currents are part of the game. Respect the kite zones, stay clear of swimming areas, and don’t go oversized unless you want an audience.
If things go wrong, High Five Kitesurf School and Cape Town Kite Club offer lessons, gear rental, and rescue services.
Beach life, rentals, and accommodation
The beach is wide and sandy, with plenty of space even in high season. Shops like Best Kiteboarding Africa rent and store gear, so you don’t need to travel heavy.
You can stay at the Dolphin Beach Hotel, right in front of the spot, or rent an apartment with ocean views — waking up to see kites already flying outside your window is priceless.
After your session, grab a cold beer at Doodles, the go-to spot for sundowners. For coffee, Reload never disappoints, and if you’re planning a romantic dinner, On the Rocks offers unbeatable sunset views.
Community and LGBT+ vibe
Cape Town is Africa’s most LGBT+ friendly city, and Blouberg reflects that open-minded, international spirit. On the beach, everyone’s cool — no judgment, just wind and smiles.
Social life here is laid-back: chats, beers, and flirting in the golden light. For real nightlife, head to De Waterkant in Cape Town, home to Café Manhattan, Pink Candy (with drag shows and shirtless fun), and Zero21, where the party goes on until sunrise.
Tips and no-wind plans
No wind doesn’t mean no fun. You can surf at Muizenberg, hike Lion’s Head at sunrise, explore Stellenbosch’s vineyards, or visit Cape Point for breathtaking views.
Pro tip: Always rig smaller than you think. The Cape Doctor loves to humble overconfident kiters. It’s better to ride smooth than to get dragged down the beach while everyone’s watching — and yes, everyone is watching.
